Scotland’s Wind Fleet Could Power Every Home Across Scotland & North England

Scotland Wind Energy Output Soars In 1H’19, Enough To Power 4.47 Million Homes

Scotland’s wind energy output soared in the first half of 2019, according to new figures provided by WeatherEnergy and highlighted by WWF Scotland, generating enough electricity to power 4.47 million homes for the same six months — enough to power all the homes in Scotland and much of the North of England as well.

Data from WeatherEnergy showed that wind output over the first six months of 2019 generated at a load factor of 40%, and could have powered 4.47 million Scottish households for the entire six months of the year — that’s 182% of all Scottish households. Conversely, this amount of electricity would also equate to the electricity needed to power all households in Scotland and many across the North of England for those same six months.

“These are amazing figures, Scotland’s wind energy revolution is clearly continuing to power ahead,” crowed Robin Parker, Climate and Energy Policy Manager for WWF Scotland. “Up and down the country, we are all benefitting from cleaner energy and so is the climate. These figures show harnessing Scotland’s plentiful onshore wind potential can provide clean green electricity for millions of homes across not only Scotland, but England as well. It’s about time the UK Government stepped up and gave Scottish onshore wind a route to market.”

“These figures really highlight the consistency of wind energy in Scotland and why it now plays a major part in the UK energy market,” added Alex Wilcox Brooke, Weather Energy Project Manager at Severn Wye Energy Agency.
